The Church is the Body of Christ in the Earth. The Word of God tells us,
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14
It is “among us” that Jesus dwells, and “among us” that we behold his Glory. Christianity is not a solo religion to be lived alone with God, in a canoe at sunrise, over the television, via Facebook, or even this website. You need to be connected to the living, breathing body of Christ in a local church.
There you will receive a great many things. Fellowship, you will be among people who truly love you and share your faith in God through Jesus Christ. Jesus said,
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:34-35 NIV
We are going to encourage you in your Christian life and help you to grow in your faith. This is very important. You will not grow spiritually if you are not around Christian people who care about you and help you to understand your relationship with God. The Church is the repository of Truth. No church is perfect, but God’s Holy Spirit will use your ordained pastor and the elders of a biblical church to lead you into all truth.
In the Church you will be discipled. Discipleship is a Christian word that means something like Mentorship or coaching in your life in Christ. It is important that you learn about your faith and grow into Christian maturity under the leadership of a mature, preferably older Christian.
Finally, it is from within the Body of Christ, that you will find your Vocation, that is, the calling that God has on your life. If you will, That is the mission that God will give you, the specific way that God wants to use you to build his kingdom. It is a huge mistake, to run ahead of God and decide too early what you will do for God’s kingdom. Wait on the leading of the Spirit, wait for your spiritual gifts to become obvious, and wait on the counsel of the Christians among whom you worship.
Membership is different in every kind of Church, so the details don’t matter so much, but make sure you are under the authority and care of a local body of believers.
